What is student sitsfest?

Sitsfest is a typical feast of academic students in the Nordic countries. Students eat, sing drinking songs, toasts and also follow shows and sits usually have some kind of theme, which defines the dress code. Toastmasters lead the event, give directions and guide the party people through the feast. In Sits there are some rules and standards that need to be followed. The rules and other directions are often told in the Sits’ invitation. There is also food usually served.

There is ready seating order which need to be followed. In most Sits men and women are seated alternately. If you have avec you will sit next to one or opposite one. Sits are usually held in the early evening and after sits the bar will be opened for everyone.

Pro tips

Sitsfest  – events have their own rules, but there is nothing to be nervous about. We have listed a few tips to ease your mind and by following the toastmasters directions, you will be just fine.

  • Be on time
  • Dress according to the theme. Overalls are also good option.
  • Drink only small sips, and drink responsibly. You can also drink non – alcoholic beverages.
  • Sit according to the pre-arranged seating plan. Sit to and rise from the table only with the permission of the toastmaster.
  • Make most of the breaks: go to the toilet every time and get more drinks if needed
  • Remember the formalities when requesting your turn to speak. The turn is asked by rising your hand.
  • Leave a little to your glass, because during some songs, you are required to empty the whole glass.
  • Toasting directions:
    • Women:  left – right – front
    • Men: right – left – front.
    • Remember to make eye contact with your toasting partner but do not clink the glasses.
